Several State Games of Mississippi competitors beat Saturday's heat by heading to the lake.
About 20 people descended on Dream Lake for the State Games watersports event, which included barefoot skiing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding and slalom.
A thunderstorm that hampered some State Games competitions bypassed Dream Lake, which is northwest of Meridian, just off Highway 19. Except for light winds that challenged slalom skiers, weather was not a factor.
"The conditions were perfect," said watersports commissioner Jack Middleton. "We had a good turnout, even though it was pretty light. We really had some good performances."
With the afternoon winds forecasted well in advance, officials moved the wakeboarding tournament to the beginning of the day's events, which began at 10 a.m. Competitors followed a boat loaded down with about a half dozen people for a taller wake and dazzled spectators with ramps into the air, flips, and other tricks.
Adam Donald took the gold medal in the intermediate class of the wakeboarding event. The advanced division gold medal went to Casey Burt. In the expert class, Bret Boes won the gold medal, and Justin Hunt got the silver medal.
Wakeboarding was the only event of the day in which participants were divided by skill level. Barefoot skiing and slalom entrants competed based on age.
In the barefooting competition for men's Division 1, the youngest class for men, Casey Burt got his second gold medal of the day. Joey Hayes won the gold medal in the men's Division 2, and Jay Leach took the silver medal. Andy Alford came away with barefoot-skiing gold in the men's Division 4, the oldest class of athletes.
Entrants were few in the kneeboarding event, but nonetheless, Jackob Smith won the gold medal in the boys' Division 2.
The afternoon's final event was the slalom, in which Jeremy Leach won gold in the boys' Division 2. Brett Dew took the gold medal in the men's Division 1.
Other results for the wakeboarding events were unavailable at The Meridian Star's press deadline.
Middleton, who took a brief leave from his duties as commissioner during the afternoon to compete in the slalom, said the event brought a pleasant mix of seasoned veterans and excited newcomers.
"Jeremy Leach, a 10-year-old, did awesome," Middleton said. "Brett Boes did the wakeboard and was sensational."
