The formula is simple for the Lady Warriors of Choctaw Central pressure, pressure and more pressure.
After a tight first half that saw Choctaw Central hold a four-point lead over Meridian High School in the State Games of Mississippi girls championship basketball game, the Lady Warriors used their trademark full-court press to force turnover after turnover on the way to a 54-29 win.
Amber Walker scored the first two points of the second half to help MHS cut the Lady Warriors' lead to 32-21, but Choctaw Central scored 24 of the next 28 points to turn the once-close game into a runaway.
Meridian led 7-2 early, and was up 12-7 following a basket by Whitney Hood with 7:11 left in the first half. CCHS scored the next six points to go up 14-12 and never trailed again.
MHS took advantage of its superior size in the early going, but Wilson said playing bigger teams is nothing new for Choctaw Central.
Senior guard Chantay Frazier took over for the Lady Warriors in the second half, scoring 11 of CCHS' first 13 points after the break. She finished the game with 16 points, while Mystee Dale scored 13.
Hood led MHS with 12 points, while Walker scored six.
Despite the 25-point loss in the championship game, Murphy said she was pleased with her team's overall effort in the State Games.
The win gave Choctaw Central consecutive gold medals in State Games competition. The Lady Warriors defeated Warren Central in the finals last year.
