Laurel-Jones, Wayne County pick up victories in district tourney

MAGEE The Laurel-Jones Americans defeated Prentiss 3-2 Monday night in the Dixie Youth Baseball 11-year-old District Tournament, and Wayne County remained unbeaten with a 9-2 victory over Magee.
The Americans will meet Magee tonight at 6. The winner of that game will meet Wayne County on Wednesday for the championship. The Laurel-Jones/Magee winner will have to beat Wayne County twice for the title.
The winner of the district goes to the State Tournament starting July 23 in Pascagoula.
The Americans led Prentiss 3-2 after one inning and that's the way it remained the rest of the game.
Benji Sullivan was the winning pitcher. Daniel Attaway, Colby Prince, Conner Cockrell, Michael Sumrall and Will Bender had hits.
Wayne County used a five-run fourth inning to subdue Magee.
Tyler Johnson pitched into the sixth and got the win. Stanley Farrar led Wayne County with two hits.
