Heavy rains this weekend contributed to several accidents in and around Meridian.
Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobbler reported that a 35-year-old man from Gainesville, Texas, died Saturday in a one-vehicle accident on Interstate 20. The accident happened at mile marker 126 about 3:30 a.m.
Federico Garcia was killed on impact. Cobler said a combination of rainy weather and excessive speed caused the accident.
Three other accidents occurred on I-20/59 Sunday night, likely because of heavy rain. One vehicle flipped in the southbound lane near the Russell exit. Two men were transported to Meridian hospitals. Two other vehicles were involved in minor accidents, although no injuries were reported.
