The Saturday Morning Juniors are ready to roll! This Saturday marks the kickoff of the annual youth program who will compete for the next 24 weeks. Youths will be grouped according to age groups including Pee Wee, Bantam, Junior and Major-Senior. If your child is interested in participating, you may still sign them up by getting to the lanes before the 10 a.m. starting time. Jeff and Shirley Gaines will be happy to assist you in signing up and getting started. We're looking for a big season so keep our future alive by having your child take part. The Wednesday afternoon doubles program is also underway. This is an excellent time for children who can't take part of Saturday. The Wednesday program begins at 4 p.m. each week and since it is a doubles format, it only takes a little over an hour. Contact Betty Dorough at Dixie Bowl for more information.
Bowlers keep bowling. Balls keep rolling. Pins keep falling. Following the third week of action in the new season local bowlers are beginning to get cranked up. No one seems to be more cranked than Barry Woods who has already collected three 700 Series in the first weeks of action. Two of those came last week with a 707 in the Friday Night Mixed and a 720 in the Wednesday Night Mixed league. He was second behind only Jeff Gaines pounded out a 10-in-a-row 288 game while on his way to a 728 set in the Hucklebuck league. Tyrone McAlpine used a nice 279 game to help propel him to a 717 and Keith Fike also used a 279 to help him claim a 716 in the Queen City league. Steven Eastman chalked up a 714 and Eric Embrey pounced on the pins for an early-season 702. Other guys producing good numbers included Bob Davis, Brian Kelsoe, Jim Broderick, Jr., Robert Brown and Alan Topcik.
The ladies are also doing their bit to get in on the act. Pat James was the leader of the pack after posting a 238 game while chalking up the only 600 of the week with a 601. Taneezia Jones splintered wood in a 234 game in the Bowlerettes league. Adrian Perry fired a nice 233 game in the Northwood league which started their season last Wednesday morning. Billie Coleman finished out the list of high scorers with a 226. Annette Palmer had a nice 198 game in the Senior Citizens league and it was good to see new bowler Linda Maloney crank out a 190 in only her third week of competitive action. Finally, I failed to mention last week that Judy Bounds had rolled a rare triplicate during the previous weeks' action. Her three 159s were the first triplicate series bowled in the young season.
Entry forms are now available for the 24th Annual Magic Age Tournament. Open to ladies 55 and over, this years' tournament will be held at Delta Lanes in Clarksdale October 16-17. The entry deadline of October 1 is only a couple of weeks away so be sure and pick up your entry and send in as soon as possible.
Final results are now posted for the recently completed Stan's Classic Tournaments Handicap Doubles Tournament which concluded on Labor Day. While entries this year were just a few short of last year's event First Place did pay $4200. Tournament Director Stan Bottorff would like to thank all the local bowlers who took part and invite everyone to compete in a rare two day 8-Game Sweeper October 2-3.
