RAYMOND The threat of Hurricane Ivan moved the Jones Junior College at Hinds Community College game from its originally scheduled date of Thursday to 3 p.m. Saturday.
The Bobcats, however, did not get the memo. They didn't start playing until 4 p.m.
By then it was a bit too late as the Eagles roared to a 24-0 halftime lead and eased to a 27-7 victory over Jones here at sun-bathed Joe Renfroe Stadium.
Consider the first half stats.
The Eagles had 14 first downs, 54 yards rushing, 168 yards passing and 222 yards of total offense. Jones had four first downs, 13 yards rushing, 26 yards passing and 39 yards of offense.
The final stats showed Hinds with 18 first downs two of which came on the final two running plays of the game 93 yards rushing and 192 yards passing for 285 yards of offense. The Eagles had but four first downs, 39 yards rushing, 24 yards passing and 63 yards of offense in the second half.
Jones finished with 13 first downs, 18 yards rushing, 130 yards passing and 148 yards of offense. In the second half, the Bobcats had nine first downs, five yards rushing, 104 yards passing and 109 yards of offense.
Hinds got off to quick start. The Eagles took the opening kickoff and moved 80 yards in six plays for a touchdown.
Quarterback Keats Baldwin connected with Terrance Jones on a 13-yard touchdown pass. Kyle Platt added the extra point and it was 7-0 with 11:44 left in the first quarter.
Jones put together its only scoring drive of the afternoon late in the second half.
The Bobcats moved 70 yards in 11 plays for its lone score. JCJC quarterback Brett Hyatt was 5-of-5 on the drive, and, Collins sophomore Voncarie Owens capped the drive with a 1-yard plunge. Enterprise freshman Michael Swancey added the conversion and it was 27-7 with 1:39 left in the third quarter.
Jones, ranked No. 16 in the latest NJCAA poll, drops to 2-1 overall, 0-1 in the South Division. They host Gulf Coast at 7 p.m. Saturday.
