Career paths vary for Southeast students

Lawyers, congressmen, teachers, marine biologists, writers and even a few journalists all were occupations students at Southeast Lauderdale High School said they wanted to pursue Wednesday during Career Day.
The class I led on journalism was one of many held throughout the campus that highlighted different career fields for students.
I was blown away by a few of the students who were able to clearly articulate their views and opinions. Stem cell research, abortion, racism, media bias, the presidential race all were topics covered over the span of four hours and four classes.
And even though the career paths varied, many of the students said they'll move away from Meridian once they finish high school. Some say they might stay for two years at Meridian Community College and then move. Others said they plan to head straight for a four-year university, far away from Meridian.
Some said they're ready to leave because there is nothing for them to do here. Others said they want to get out and explore other places and, if they choose to, return later in life.
Johnnie Latham, 16, an 11th-grader, agreed.
Not every student, though, said they wanted to leave their hometown. Some said they love it here.
