When do we elect justices?

State Supreme Court Justices are elected to eight-year terms. While the terms are staggered, not all of the positions are up for re-election every eight years.
This year, four seats are up for grabs including two in District 1, or the central district which stretches from Lauderdale County west to the Mississippi River.
All but two state Supreme Court justices take office the January following their election.
The two exceptions are the District 1 (Central) Position 1 seat, held by Justice William L. "Bill" Waller, and the District 2 (Southern) Position 1 seat, held by Justice Jess H. Dickinson. They take office 14 months after their election.
