Witherspoon Elementary School was one of 12 Mississippi schools to receive a Closing the Gap Award Tuesday at a luncheon held in Jackson.
The $5,000 award was given in recognition of the outstanding progress made in closing the achievement gaps on statewide standardized tests. This is the second year Witherspoon has received the award. Henry Johnson, state superintendent of education, said he is proud of the progress schools have made.
The $5,000 will be used to help schools as they continue to improve student learning outcomes. Contributors to the Closing the Gap awards include the Phil Hardin Foundation in Meridian.
