The Dolc Duo of flutist Lisa Davis and guitarist Stan Putnam will be the guests at Thursday's St. Paul's Chamber Music Series.
The concert begins at 12:05 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1116 23rd Ave. Admission is free and the concert is open to the public.
A native of the Pacific Northwest, Davis began her flute studies at the age of 14 under the tutelage of Seattle Symphony flutist Scott Goff. She later received performance scholarships for study at the Boston Conservatory of Music and at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California. She graduated on full scholarship from the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where she studied under the renowned flutist Julius Baker.
Davis has had much experience as an orchestral flutist, having worked with many leading conductors including the late Eugene Ormandy, Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa, Robert Shaw and Claudio Abbado. As a soloist, she has performed from coast to coast as well as for the Birmingham City Stages Festival, Birmingham Chamber Music Society and Artburst series of concerts. She has also been featured in solo radio recitals on WQXR in New York and WHYY in Philadelphia.
Davis has taught for the music departments at Birmingham Southern College and the University of Alabama at Birmingham and is currently teaching privately at her home in Hoover, Ala. Audience members may also be familiar with the voice of Davis as she served for many years as program director and morning classical music host for WBHM-FM, Birmingham's public radio station.
Putnam began playing guitar at the age of 13. Since then, he has explored many styles of music including bluegrass, jazz, rock, and classical, performing professionally for the past 20 years throughout the Southeast.
He brings to the Dolc Duo a great sensitivity to audiences, and myriad musical influences that help to round out the repertoire.
Putnam is also a member of the "A Fortiori" guitar quartet.
Davis and Putnam have performed together as the Dolc Duo for more than 10 years. When not performing and teaching, the husband-wife team enjoy taking on mammoth and seemingly never-ending house-building projects, spending time at the beach and parenting their 16 year old son, Daniel.
