Clerk office hours won't change

Franklin County Circuit Clerk Anita Scott said she has no plans to take advantage of an Alabama Supreme Court opinion that allows clerk offices to be closed to the public for up to 10 hours a week to allow catch-up work to be done.
Surround-ing counties are taking advantage and closing during certain hours, Scott said, but she said she doesn't feel that step is necessary in Franklin County at this time.
Scott said Alabama Chief Justice Drayton Neighbors issued a memo this week that allowed up to 10 hours of "quiet time" a week, to be used at the discretion of the circuit clerk, to allow employees to catch up on work.
Scott said her office is open for business from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., with the exception of no phone service for two hours a day.
Scott said the workload of the job is making her re-consider an earlier decision not to seek election for the position in 2006. Scott was appointed to the position when the previous circuit clerk, Joey Newton, resigned mid-term to take a job in Montgomery.
Scott's office may be reached at 332-8861.
