Vina junior Nash Creekmore is one of 25 candidates for this year's Mizeman Trophy, an award created roughly 10 years ago to honor local football players who excel on the field despite certain limitations in size and stature.
Mizeman candidates must stand no taller than six feet and weigh no more than 175 pounds.
From ballots cast by members of the local sports media as well as former winners of the award, three finalists and their respective head coaches will appear as guests at this year's award ceremony during a taping of the show "In the Know with the Shoals" at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 14. The program will air the following day at 7 a.m., 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.
This year's winner will receive a $500 scholarship, the new Mizeman Trophy and a certificate.
Creekmore made a major impact for the Red Devils on both sides of the ball during the 2006 season. The 5-foot-10, 130-pound junior rushed for 959 yards on 166 carries and also caught 11 passes for 120 yards. He scored seven touchdowns and finished with more than 1,600 all-purpose yards.
Defensively, Creekmore recorded 108 tackles and also had two interceptions, two sacks and two forced fumbles. He was named Team MVP in 2005 and 2006.
"Nash plays hard every game and takes a lot of punishment for someone his size," said Vina coach Bill Smith, who nominated Creekmore for the award. "His stats on a 2-8 team speak for themselves."
Other candidates for this year's Mizeman Trophy are senior guard Ace Beam of Addison; senior running back Jeremy Beavers of Lexington; senior quarterback Nathan Berryman of Hatton; senior running back/wide receiver Mark Campbell of Hazlewood; senior fullback Daniel Farris of Lynn; junior running back Joey Frey of Hamilton; senior running back Caleb Grapham of Brooks; junior quarterback T.J. Green of Speake; senior running back Xavier Hampton of R.A. Hubbard; senior quarterback Caleb Hyndes of Winfield; junior running back Dominique King of Deshler; junior running back Cody Little of Mount Hope; junior running back Justin Mason of Florence Christian; sophomore quarterback Adam McCarley of Phillips; sophomore quarterback Jonathan McNatt of Falkville; junior quarterback Josh McAbee of West Morgan; senior wide receiver Eric Parker of Brewer; senior wide receiver Justin Raper of Hackleburg; senior fullback Kiara Ricks of Sheffield; sophomore running back Shawn Southward of Florence; senior fullback Andrew Suddith of Wilson; senior defensive end/tight end Dylan Wallace of Lawrence County; sophomore safety Jeremy White of Haleyville; and senior wide receiver Tyler Young of Hartselle.
