PHIL CAMPBELL – Adam Mitchell scored 18 points and Korey Pounders made four of Phil Campbell's nine three-pointers on Saturday as the Bobcats cruised past Belgreen 67-31 in the B-Varsity finals of the Franklin County Tournament.
Mitchell and Daniel Bryant each hit a pair of treys for Phil Campbell, which made a total of 15 threes in two games at the tournament. Mitchell made five in Thursday's semifinal win over Tharptown.
"For some reason, we came out and shot the ball really well over here," Phil Campbell coach Kelly Kiser said. "Especially Adam Mitchell. He's kind of a streaky shooter, and he was really hot in both games. I wish we had shot the ball this well all season."
Belgreen took an early 3-2 lead on a three by Brandon Hester, but Phil Campbell caught fire and scored the next 22 points. Pounders hit three treys during the run, and Mitchell also had nine first-quarter points as the Bobcats built a 26-5 lead.
Phil Campbell stayed hot in the second quarter, out-scoring Belgreen 20-10 to take a 46-15 lead into the half.
Pounders opened the third quarter with another three, and the Bobcats were well on their way to winning the county title.
"That's one of the main goals for a B-Team, to win the county championship," Kiser said. "We've had our ups and downs this year, but I'm tickled to death for the kids. The job of a B-Team is to prepare kids to play at the varsity level, and I think we've done that."
Pounders finished with 15 points, and Corey Casas added nine. Pablo Santiago had eight, and Bryant and Matt Waid each added six. Josh Brannon added five.
Derrick Simmons led Belgreen with 12 points. Spencer Hargett added seven, and Cody Welch had six.
