The Russellville boys tennis team remained undefeated on Monday with a pair of wins over Austin and Brooks.
The Golden Tigers (7-0) edged Austin 5-4, led by T.J. Drake's 6-1, 6-0 win over Alex Worley at No. 1 singles. Kiefer Rea (6-2, 6-0) and Jacob Hill (6-1, 6-1) also won singles matches for Russellville.
Drake and Hill won their doubles match 6-4, 6-1, and Rea teamed with Tyler Malone to win 6-2, 6-2.
Against Brooks, the Golden Tigers cruised to an 8-1 win. Carson Hutchins (a 10-5 winner), John Michael Mayfield (10-8), Chase Johnson (10-8), John McAlister (10-3), Brandon King (10-0) and Jordan Burcham (10-1) all won singles matches for Russellville.
Mayfield and McAlister won their doubles match 10-2, and King and Burcham teamed for a 10-1 win.
Coach Jimmy Rea spoke of the level of competition necessary for the Golden Tigers to do well in the postseason.
"We need to play tough teams to get ready for the state tournament," Rea said. "That's why we went to Decatur to play in the Decatur Invitational this past weekend. We came in fourth out of eighteen teams, which isn't bad considering the tournament included nine 6A teams. We only lost out to large 6A schools. We have to improve to reach our goals in the state tournament, and demanding tournaments are one way for us to improve."
The RHS boys and girls tennis teams play their home matches at the Russellville Tennis Center behind the Russellville Football Stadium.
