A Russellville woman will spend the next 10 years in prison for striking her child in the head with a wall ornament.
Bonita Rangel, 45, of 706 Harrison Ave. in Russellville, showed little emotion during the hearing Wednesday morning where Circuit Judge Terry Dempsey sentenced her to a decade in prison for child abuse.
Rangel was convicted in April of striking her 13-year-old son during an altercation in May 2006.
According to the medical reports, the child suffered a concussion and needed 11 staples in his head to close the wound.
During sentencing, Judge Dempsey mentioned that Rangel had not shown remorse for her actions, which caused significant injuries to her son.
In response to the judge, Rangel said, "I regret that my son lied in court."
Rangel's attorney, John Benn, gave the court a notice of appeal.
Rangel completed an application for an appeal bond and according to the Circuit Clerk's office, Dempsey granted her a $50,000 appeal bond.
If her bond is met, Rangel will remain free pending her appeal. She is currently in the Franklin County Jail.
