RED BAY-The Red Bay City Council voted to accept the resignation of a Water and Gas board member during a special called council meeting held Monday evening at the Red Bay Senior Citizen's Center.
Joe Beasley resigned from the Red Bay Water and Gas Board Friday, June 15, 2007 as a result of his selection as temporary superintendent of the water and gas, Mayor Jeff Reid said.
"A Water and Gas board member cannot serve in a paid position with the water and gas," Reid said.
Beasley replaced long-time superintendent Danny Maxwell resigned his position, which was unexpected, Reid said.
"I wasn't expecting Danny [Maxwell] to resign," Reid said.
Beasley will serve as superintendent until the Water and Gas board hires a permanent superintendent, which can take up to 90 days. It is unclear whether Beasley will be offered the position on a permanent basis, Reid said.
"I don't know if Joe will get the permanent position but I do know that Joe has taken a leave of absence from his full time job in order to take the temporary position," Reid said.
He added that the Red Bay Water and Gas Board handles all the water and gas business, and that the council only appoints the board members. The board is a completely separate entity from the city council.
The next Red Bay City Council meeting will be held on Monday, July 2, 2007 at 7 p.m. at the Red Bay Senior Citizen's Building.
