Russellville fire fighters will be participating in fundraisers for the Muscular Dystrophy Association in upcoming weeks and months.
On July 21, a Poker Run motorcycle ride will take place. Registration will begin at Fire Station No. 2 at 8:30 a.m. The first bike will leave at 9:30, and the last bike at 11 a.m. The ride will end at 2 p.m.
Entry fee is $15 to enter, plus $10 dollars for additional riders or cards.
The ride begins at Fire Station No. 2. The first stop is C&C Cycles in Tuscumbia. It then continues to Moulton where the next stop is at the Warrior Trading Company. Riders will then follow the Wilderness Highway to Haleyville's new biker resort, South Eagle Resort. Finally, the ride will conclude at Fire Station No. 2 in Russellville.
The winner will receive a cash prize. There will also be door prizes and drawings.
"We hope riders will come out and support this. We need all the help we can get," said Shane Mansell, Russellville Firefighter and event coordinator. Another fundraiser is the MDA's annual Fill a Boot drive. On August 4, 8 and September 1, firefighters will be located at the intersection of Washington and Madison to collect donations from the public in fire boots.
"Last year we raised $1400 in this fundraiser," said Mansell.
The State of Alabama raised more than $400,000 last year in the drive.
MDA helps children and adults who are affected by the 43 neuromuscular diseases covered by MDA's comprehensive medical services and research programs. All of the money raised by the Russellville Fire Department will stay in North Alabama, according to the MDA.
Anyone interested in participating in either event may find out more information by calling Mansell at (256) 627-2837.
