BELGREEN – Belgreen High School has hired a social science teacher this fall to fill the head coach opening for varsity baseball.
Dustin Pounders was hired late this summer after former baseball coach Derek Ergle transferred to Tharptown High School.
"It's seems relaxed here, and you don't feel pushed into situations. We have good kids, and I haven't had any major problems. And people seem ready to rally around the school," Pounders said.
Pounders, of Columbus, Miss., graduated in May from the University of West Alabama in Livingston, where he earned a bachelor's degreee in history and secondary education.
He has four seniors this year, including Justin Gardner, Jesse Edwards, Kyle Warren and Shane Fretwell.
Pounders said that some of them came to visit him when he was hired, and he would like to get the team new uniforms and equipment.
"They would love to have the same uniforms, cleats and bags, and hopefully we can do that if we raise enough money," said Pounders. "Basketball means a lot to this school, and I'd like to get baseball to where it's looked at the same way."
