White wins 5K, Parritt finishes first in 1-mile run

Former University of North Alabama runner Heath White won the Watermelon Run 5K Saturday at Russellvile High School, and 13-year-old Hamp Perritt finished first in the 1-mile run.
White finished the 3.1-mile race in 17:34, which was a six seconds faster than second-place runner Thayne White of Hamilton (17:42). Phil Campbell's Alex Smothers, 19, came in third with a time of 18:59.
Perritt led all 1-mile runners with a 5:31.95 finish. He was followed by Stacey Lemay, 45, of Florence, who finished in 5:43.82 and 11-year-old Kamron Potter, of Town Creek, with a time of 5:48.04.
There were 104 runners, including 56 who finished the 5K and 48 who completed the 1-mile course.
In the 5K, Florence's Sandy Lynch, 38, won the female overall championship with a time of 21:22, and was followed by Courtney Rutherford (23:21) and Lisa Hanback (26:52).
The female masters overall winner was Russellville's Elaine Malmquist, 48, who finished in 27:48, and the male masters overall winner was Lynn Tiller, 53, of Hoenwald, Tenn., with a time of 20:39.
Joni Buttram, 13, finished in 27:16 to win the 1-14 female age group, and Parritt won the 1-14 male age group with a 19:49 time.
