October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Safeplace Inc. is holding Violence Is Preventable (VIP) Conference in an effort to bring awareness to domestic violence with hopes of preventing it.
The event will be held at Highland Park Baptist Church in Muscle Shoals on Monday, Oct. 15, 2007 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to being informative, the event qualifies as credits for CEUs or APOST credits.
"The event is geared toward law enforcement, nurses, attorneys, social workers and counselors, who deal with domestic violence on a regular basis," Public Relations Coordinator and Events Planner for Safeplace, Heath Haddock said.
Speakers for the event include Lt. Mark Wynn, Donna Montgomery, Kathy Connolly, Gary Alverson, and Eileen Siegel.
Each speaker will talk about different aspects of domestic violence, including domestic violence law, the effect domestic violence has on children, sexual assault, childhood sexual assault, and the male victims of domestic violence.
"It's important for law enforcement to be aware of the law and how to deal with domestic violence cases," Franklin County Domestic Violence Response Coalition Co-Chair David Hester said.
The cost of the event is $20 per person, which includes lunch from Lenny's Sub Shop.
The deadline to register is Monday, Oct. 8.
