When I think about all the mistakes I have made in my life, I sometimes wish life was like a VCR so that I can go back and make the right choice instead of living with consequences of the wrong one.
Over the years I have had this thought repeatedly, and while none of my choices have been catastrophic, I have made some not-so-great ones and have had to live with the end results.
The other day a friend told me that if life were really like a VCR we'd be too busy trying to fix the past to get to our future.
As I thought of what she said, I have to say that I agree.
We all make mistakes, at work, at home, raising our children, with our spouses, our parents and even with our siblings and friends. Mistakes are unavoidable because we are all human and to be human means we are flawed.
If we could fix all of our mistakes, would we learn from them?
If we never had to face a consequence, would we know better next time? I believe the answer to these questions is no.
Everything that happens to us, every mistake, every wrong turn, brings us to where we are. If we kept rewinding, we would never get here and nothing will be gained. We would just keep rewinding because there will always be something we could have done differently in every moment.
I know it's a clich/ but it's true, hindsight is always 20/20. All we can do is try to make the best decision in the moment and live with the aftermath – whatever it may be.
I believe that all my wrong turns and mistakes have made me who I am. I know I would not be the same person without them. So, I guess God knew what he was doing to not make time travel possible, and force us to live with our mistakes regardless of the consequences.
They are what make us who we are.
