PHIL CAMPBELL – Phil Campbell senior Ashden Mayfield knows how to keep busy.
Mayfield, 17, is a varsity cheerleader in the fall and a discus thrower for the Bobcats track team in the spring. Her favorite sporting event to participate in is a cheerleading exhibition held annually at Haleyville High School before football season begins.
"I like the WJJB tailgate party, which happens once a year. We didn't win this year, but we did get second place," said Mayfield, who called fellow cheerleader Ashley Glasgow the funniest person she knows at school. "Ashley makes me laugh – she's crazy, but a good kind of crazy."
Mayfield also serves as president of Student Council and 4-H and belongs to the Media Club, History Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and yearbook staff.
Mayfield, a straight-A student and voted Most Intelligent by her classmates, said her favorite subject is also her toughest.
"Math is probably my favorite subject because I have to work harder, especially at pre-cal," said Mayfield, whose favorite teachers at Phil Campbell are English teacher Susan Norton and geometry treacher Resa Witt. "It just means more to me to do well in math."
Mayfield said the people at Phil Campbell will be what she misses the most when she graduates.
"I like the people here – the students are friendly, and all of my classmates are friendly," she said.
After graduation, Mayfield plans to major in physical therapy at either the University of Alabama or the University of South Alabama.
"I want to be a physical therapist," said Mayfield, who is an avid Crimson Tide fan. "I'm going to visit Alabama Oct. 30 to see if they a major that's related to physical therapy. If they don't, I'll probably to go South Alabama."
In her spare time, Mayfield enjoys short-distance running and spending time with friends.
"I like to hang out with friends and sometimes I like to go running," Mayfield said.
She said she doesn't own an IPod or MP3 player, but she does enjoy going to concerts.
"I like a little bit of everything. I went to an Emerson Drive concert with my boyfiend and two other friends on Thursday night, and I'm going to see Rascal Flatts either in Florence or Huntsville," Mayfield said. "I felt dead Friday, and we had our first psychology test that morning. But I passed it (with a 90)."
Mayfield said she can deal with a lower grade, but only if she did her best.
"I'm OK with making a 90, as long as it's the best I can do."
Mayfield is the daughter of Tammie Rives and Chris Mayfield. She has one brother, Bradley, who attends the University of Alabama.
