RED BAY – One Red Bay salon took a day to pamper cancer survivors as part of their observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Emma's Salon invited cancer patients and survivors alike to come into their salon Wednesday and receive a free service of their choice along with extra goodies provided by suppliers.
"We had 16 cancer survivors pre-register for this event," co-owner Susan Howard said.
The salon performed facials, shampoo and sets, manicures and pedicures and perms as part of the event.
"We are going to make this an annual event, and hopefully, get more salons involved," Howard said.
She added that she wants all of the salons in Red Bay to get involved, but Gulf State Representative Tommy Hill has bigger plans.
"I would like to see all my salons involved and do something like this next year," Hill said. "Starting (Thursday) we have a year to plan the next event."
Hill added that before Wednesday he had not seen the effects of cancer up close and personal.
"I have heard things about this person and that person being diagnosed with cancer, but until today, I had not heard what these patients have to go through."
Hill donated several products as prizes for the event as did State Beauty Supply.
While the event was held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, all cancer patients were invited to the event because all cancer patients have to go through devastating treatments in order to survive.
Jean Hardin Emma's co-owner – and a breast cancer survivor of one-year – said the event is a special way for the salon to help each patient with their treatment and recovery.
Refreshments were served, and a special Pink Ribbon cake was served as each patient celebrated another day of life with the ladies at Emma's Salon.
