Prattville repeats as 6A champions
BIRMINGHAM – Prattville's Lions (15-0), ranked first all season in Alabama and second nationally, captured their second straight Class 6A state football title with the 14-0 shutout over Spain Park Saturday to close out the 2007 Super 6 state championships.
An estimated crowd of 20,000 was on hand at Legion Field as the Lions (15-0) extended their winning streak to 30 games-the longest current streak in the AHSAA.
Class 6A game MVP Jerodis Williams ran for 116 yards on 17 carries and scored the game's only touchdowns with first-half runs of 21 yards in the first quarter and 11 yards in the third period.
Cordova claims second 2A title
BIRMINGHAM – Junior running back Tim Simon ran for 142 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries Saturday, but it was his diving slap of Chase Horn's final fourth-down pass of the game at the goal line that preserved the 21-13 win in the Super 6 Class 3A state football finals.
Simon's break-up of the pass intended for Quaimain Simmons came with just 24 seconds remaining allowed Cordova (15-0) to run out the clock.
Simon scored on runs of 1 and 5 yards and Jake Howton caught a 63-yard TD pass from Ryan Smith for the Blue Devils' touchdowns.
Clay County (14-1) scored first on a 41-yard keeper by Horn in the first quarter. A minute later Smith and Howton hooked up on the 63-yarder when freshman receiver Howton found himself wide open down the left hash mark near the 30 and then out-ran the Panthers' secondary to the end zone.
