Russellville senior placekicker Josh Montgomery has announced his intent to play football at the University of North Alabama.
Montgomery (5-8, 183) will play for coach Mark Hudspeth and compete for a spot on a roster that includes senior Kenny Spencer of Glenwood, Iowa (6-1, 200), freshman Jake Ridgeway (5-8, 165) of Fyffe and Deshler's Jerrod Henry (5-9, 170).
"I really appreciate the opportunity to earn a spot on their team," Montgomery said. " I thank Coach Hud for the confidence he has expressed in me. And I really look forward to continuing to work with coach (Mike) King to become a better kicker."
Although several schools had expressed interest in Montgomery, it came down to a decision between the SEC's Mississippi State and UNA, a member of the Division II Gulf South Conference.
"I would be honored to go to either school, but I believe that the better opportunity is with UNA," Montgomery said. "I plan on working very hard so I can contribute to the team. I told Coach Hud that I would work to be ready to kick in a championship game, and he seemed to like that."
He has already received academic scholarships from several schools, including UNA, and plans to double major in mathematics and mechanical engineering.
Montgomery converted 42-of-44 PATs during his senior season and made 6-of-7 field goals with a long of 39 yards. He holds six school kicking records, including most PATs made and most points scored, both in a game and career. He is also tenth on the Alabama State High School Association's record for most PATs made in a career, and achieved All-County and All-Area honors as a junior and senior.
