THARPTOWN – The Red Bay football team looked worthy of a No. 4 ranking in Class 2A Friday during its jamboree game at Tharptown.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they defeated the Wildcats 40-20.
Red Bay coach Dale Jeffreys said jamboree games are not good predictors of how a team will perform during the regular season, and this one was no exception.
"It remains to bee seen (how we will do)," Jeffreys said. "Tharptown is still starting out. It will be a different level of competition from here on out."
Red Bay scored early on a 46-yard run by Cody Arnold.
Arnold finished the game with 136 rushing yards and he returned a fumble for another touchdown.
The Red Bay offense rushed for 393 yards, but only managed 64 passing yards.
Kyle Senkbeil also scored a pair of touchdowns for the Tigers. Matt Montgomery and Andre Newell had one touchdown each.
Tharptown quarterback Tyler Cagle led the Wildcat offense with 150 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Trevor Hallmark scored the other touchdown for Tharptown.
The Wildcat quarterbacks combined for 98 passing yards and two interceptions.
Red Bay will open the regular season on the road with a game at Lee-Huntsville Saturday.
Tharptown will host Speak Friday in the first region game in school history.
