Lady Golden Tigers open season with second-place finish in tournament

FLORENCE – The Russellville High School volleyball team opened its season Saturday with a second-place finish in a tournament at Florence High School.
The Lady Tigers began pool play by defeating Cherokee and Colbert County in straight sets before also defeating a strong Wilson team in straight sets to improve to 3-0 and win their pool.
In the quarterfinals Russellville continued its streak of straight-sets wins by knocking off Rogers. The streak ended in the semifinals as the Lady Tigers dropped their first set of the season to Loretto, Tenn., but they stormed back to win the second set as well as the decisive third set to win the match.
Russellville faced the defending Class 3A state champions Lexington in the finals. The Lady Golden Bears proved too strong and the Lady Golden Tigers took second.
"I am so proud of our girls. To win five straight matches and reach the finals in this tournament is a huge accomplishment for our program," said Russellville coach Charlotte Dollar. "This was a total team effort, with every player doing their job and contributing. When this team plays as a cohesive unit like they did today, they are a very exciting team to watch."
Russellville will host Muscle Shoals and Tupelo Thursday at 4 p.m.
