Getting reacquainted with an old friend

This week I got reacquainted with an old friend while I was at the East Franklin fall festival.
I had not seen this old friend in a very long time, but when we saw each other it was like no time had passed.
The old friend I am talking about is not a person nor is it a pet of any kind. My old friend is a caramel apple. I know it sounds crazy but I love caramel apples.
They are warm, gooey and delicious. But they are more than that.
They are a reminder of my childhood. They take me back in time to where there are no deadlines, decisions or worries.
I remember making caramel apples when I was a kid.
The worst part about making them was opening all those little caramels. It would take us forever because we'd sneak a few in our mouths.
Once we had enough, the fun would start. We seemed to get caramel everywhere. I loved to make them, and then eat them.
Guess what? Nothing has changed. I still love to eat them.
They are my favorite fall treat.
My boys have never really had a caramel apple until now.
Eating them at the festival made me want to make them at home for my boys so that they can have happy memories as well.
I had no doubt they would enjoy them as much as me, and I was right. They love to do anything in the kitchen with me so this was right up their ally.
I also realized there are only two bad things about making them for my kids: opening the wrappers and cleaning up the mess.
