Domestic awareness is not just one month issue

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which is a time that the Franklin County Domestic Violence Response Coalition devotes to raising awareness to violence in the home.
Statistics show that a woman is beaten by her partner every 15 minutes in the United States, and one in three women will experience some kind of physical abuse from their partner.
More than 4 million women a year undergo this abuse.
The Russellville Police Department has responded to more than 80 calls since January, whereas the sheriff's department's calls stretch into the hundreds.
In an effort to educate the public about dealing with domestic violence, the Colbert and Lauderdale County Domestic Violence Response Coalitions are hosting a Violence Is Preventable (VIP) Conference on Domestic Violence on Oct. 22.
We applaud the efforts of the coalition to combat the damaging effects of this cowardly abuse.
The conference is a joint effort of county and state agencies who work diligently to provide help for those in need.
We should all be thankful to have volunteers in our community who give of themselves for such a cause.
