Phil Campbell Elementary has been spotlighted as one of 10 rural schools on the Center for Rural Alabama's list for high-achieving schools in high poverty areas.
According to the Alabama Department of Education, more than 60 percent of all students in rural schools receive free or reduced lunches, which in an important socioeconomic factor in student performance results.
Phil Campbell, which joins Meek in Winston County as the only two rural schools recognized in northwest Alabama by the study, has more than 70 percent of its students on free or reduced lunches. Despite that statistic, the school's 484 pre-kindergarten through sixth grade students were recognized for their overall high scores on state and national standardized testing.
