Two area football players have been named finalists for the Mizeman Trophy, an award designed to recognize players that help their team's chances of winning while also being a positive role model at their school.
Russellville's Nathan McAlister and Tharptown's Trevor Hallmark are among the 20 finalists for this year's award. Winners will receive a scholarship.
According to the Mizeman Trophy Web site, the award was established in 1997 in an effort to counteract the discipline problems arising in schools by redirecting "the attention of our young people to activities and goals that are wholesome and worthwhile."
The goal of the Mizeman Trophy is to promote athletics and reward players for excelling and positive performance.
Organizers hope this recognition will provide role models for junior high and elementary students.
Players are nominated by their coaches and must meet certain requirements. He must be less than 6 feet tall and weight less than 175 pounds. The player must also demonstrate the following qualities – determination, work ethic, character, athletic ability and leadership.
Players from 30 schools in seven counties – Colbert, Franklin, Lawrence, Lauderdale, Marion, Morgan and Winston – were nominated.
