Scholars Bowl squad among best in the state

Championship teams aren't a novelty at Russellville High School, but one squad has quietly dominated the district and region over the past decade.
Led by coach Sharon Daily, the RHS Scholars Bowl team claimed its fourth straight district championship last Friday at Northwest-Shoals Community College in Phil Campbell.
The team, comprised of seniors John McAlister, Seth Stewart, Robbie Williams and junior Nick Frederick and alternates Jeremy Vess, a senior, and Joe Stanford, a junior, will travel to Tuscaloosa in two weeks to compete in the 10-team tournament at Holy Spirit and defend its regional title.
RHS, which has finished in the top four of the state tournament five times – including consecutive runner-up finishes from 2002-04 and a fourth place finish in 2008 – is heavily favored to return to the state tournament for the tenth time in the last 12 years after defeating defending state champion Hoover en route to the Bevill Invitational Tournament championship Feb. 13.
We applaud the efforts by Mrs. Daily and her players, and we wish the team best of luck in its quest to bring home a state trophy.
