Russellville's Mayfield, Hutchens finish second at state tennis tournament
MOBILE – While the Russellville boys tennis team fell short of its goal for a state title, two players finished second in singles action.
Carson Hutchens and John-Michael Mayfield were the only Russellville players to reach the semifinals and both moved on to the finals.
Hutchens – playing No.-5 singles – defeated Josh Bergland of Spanish Fort 7-6, 6-4 and Briarwood's Preston Tonliatos 7-6(3), 6-4 to reach the finals.
In the finals, Hutchens lost to Richard Kirkland of Saint Paul's 2-6, 1-6.
Mayfield, playing No.-6 singles, defeated James Barnes of Muscle Shoals 6-4, 6-0 to advance to the semifinals where he beat Sylacauga's John Compton 7-6, 6-4.
His title quest ended in the finals against Andrew McGee of Saint Paul's, who beat Hutchens 6-1, 6-4.
