Vina can clinch spot in playoffs with win

VINA – This week the Vina football team has a chance to do something it has not done since the 1998 season – clinch a playoff spot.
The Red Devils are 1-5 overall, but their lone win came against region and county foe Tharptown. A win against Waterloo this week would ensure Vina of the playoff spot.
With only six teams in the region, Vina could secure the fourth and final playoff berth with only two region wins.
Beating Waterloo (1-4, 0-3) would give the Red Devils a 2-3 record in the region. Even if Tharptown were to upset R.A. Hubbard to earn its second region win, Vina would get the playoff berth because it holds the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Wildcats thanks to a 34-7 win against Tharptown earlier this season.
If Vina does beat Waterloo, it would also secure a playoff berth for Phillips. R.A. Hubbard and Shoals Christian each have three wins and have already clinched playoff spots.
Vina would be the fourth seed because all the other teams ahead of them hold the head-to-head tiebreakers.
If Vina does not beat Waterloo, the playoff picture gets murky.
Should Waterloo defeat the Red Devils but lose to Phillips while Tharptown loses to R.A. Hubbard, there would be a three-way tie for the final playoff spot.
If Waterloo beats Vina and Phillips while Tharptown upsets R.A. Hubbard, Tharptown would get the playoff spot because it owns the head-to-head tiebreaker against Waterloo.
If Waterloo beats Vina and Phillips while Tharptown loses to R.A. Hubbard, Waterloo would get the playoff berth.
Friday's game against Waterloo is at Vina and begins at 7 p.m.
