PHIL CAMPBELL – The Red Bay varsity girls had more of a fight than they were expecting Thursday night, but the Lady Tigers held to beat cross county and Area 14 rival Phil Campbell 53-39.
Red Bay (4-4, 2-1) controlled the game early, but the Lady Bobcats were pesky hosts that refused to go away until Red Bay hit some clutch free throws in the closing minute to secure the victory.
Caitlin Childers, Hannah Sharp and Taylor Hester were 8-of-8 from the free-throw line in the final minute. Red Bay coach Donnie Roberts was glad to see that kind of performance.
"We haven't been shooting like that," Roberts said. "Last Friday we lost to Mars Hill and were 19-of-35 from the free-throw line."
Red Bay opened the game with an 11-2 run before Phil Campbell found its scoring rhythm to cut the deficit to 17-10 by the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Bobcats (5-8, 1-2) continued to rally and trailed 27-22 at halftime.
Red Bay opened the third quarter on a 9-0 run, but the Lady Tiger offense cooled as Phil Campbell ended the quarter on an 8-1 run.
The Lady Bobcats got as close as six points with about a minute remaining in the fourth quarter before Red Bay ended the game with the eight free throws.
Whitney Sharp and Hannah Sharp had 15 points each to lead Red Bay while Hester scored nine and Morgan McKinney and Childers scored seven points each.
Ciara Harvill scored 14 points and Whitley Yocom added 13 points to lead the Lady Bobcats. Catilin Stancil added eight points while Taylor Scott scored four points and Lindsey Jackson scored two points.
