Holding a 38-22 lead heading into the final quarter of play, the third-ranked Belgreen varsity girls basketball team appeared to be heading back to the Northwest Regional Tournament for the second year in a row.
The Lady Bulldogs' opponent, Covenant Christian, had no plans of going down with out a fight.
The Lady Eagles offense caught fire and their defense buckled down as Covenant outscored Belgreen 31-12 in the final eight minutes to stun the Lady Bulldogs 53-50.
It was a shocking end to the season for Belgreen, which reached as high as No. 2 in the Class 1A rankings earlier this season and ended Red Bay's streak of 11 consecutive county titles.
Amber Smith scored a game-high 21 points for the Lady Bulldog.
Also scoring for Belgreen were Lauren Oliver (8), Lydia DeVaney (7), Katy Britton (6), Kristi O'Dell (4) and Loren McVicker (2).
It was the second meeting of the season between these two squads. Belgreen won the previous meeting 71-33.
