RHS golf falls in sub-state

The Russellville golf team’s spectacular season came to an end Monday as the Golden Tigers finished seventh out of eight teams in the sub-state round of the playoffs.

The top three teams — Athens, John Carroll and Boaz — qualified for the state tournament.

Ty Trapp shot 78 for Russellville while Will Bragwell shot 79.

Hagen Price shot 81. Alex Pounders and Justin Overton each shot 83.

None of the players qualified for state as individuals as Trapp finished four shots behind the final individual qualifier.

“They had a great season and should have a good season next year,” said Russellville coach Jason Haithcock. “I knew qualifying for the state tournament would be a stretch, but I wanted them to get the experience of qualifying for sub-state.”

The Golden Tigers will lose only one of their top five players next season. They finished no worse than second during any of their regular season matches and placed fourth at the section tournament to qualify for the sub-state round.

Smith misses cut

Lindsay Smith also came up short in her bid for a berth in the state tournament.

She shot an 85 in the sub-state tournament Tuesday and missed qualifying for the state tournament by four strokes.

“She played a great round of golf today,” Haithcock said. “There is nothing for her to be upset about.”
