Man flees Franklin Courthouse following warrant notification

A Lawrence County man trying to retrieve an identification card at the Franklin County Courthouse Wednesday ran after being notified of a warrant issued for his arrest, authorities said.

Investigators said Zachary Burgess, 20, 1020 Rose Street, Moulton ran after being notified by the State Trooper driver’s license division inside The Franklin County Courthouse that a warrant had been issued for his arrest in Lawrence County on charges of first-degree burglary.
Franklin County Courthouse officials said Burgess attempted to get an identification card for occupational purposes in the basement of the Franklin County courthouse, when a warrant notification came up after typing his name into the courthouse computer system.
After the notification appeared on the computer screen, the Franklin County Public Safety officer, who was taking Burgess’s information, contacted courthouse deputies to come and handle the situation.
Officials said once deputies arrived down stairs to confront the 20-year old about the warrant, Burgess took off up the stairs and out the front doors of the courthouse.
Franklin County Courthouse deputies said a Russellville Police officer inside of the courthouse at the time helped chase after Burgess as he went outside.
Authorities said while outside, a courthouse employee attempted to stop him, but was unsuccessful.
Assistance from the Russellville Police department was called in immediately and Burgess was apprehended a few blocks away from the courthouse.
Burgess was transferred to the Franklin County jail pending transfer back to Lawrence County.
