Russellville’s White team rolls past Black team 28-13 in spring game

Russellville took a different approach to its spring game this season as the Golden Tigers played an intra-squad game instead of playing another team.

Players went through spring practice divided into a Black team and a White team in preparation for the game.

The black team looked better in practice coach Doug Goodwin said, but when the teams took the field for the spring game the White team dominated for a 28-13 victory.

“I saw a lot of good plays and good effort. It was a good spring,” Goodwin said. “We wanted to get a lot of people on the field.”

The White team took advantage of its first possession, driving more than half the field to score on an 18-yard run by quarterback Devin Parker. Adam Brown added the extra point to put the White team ahead 7-0.

The White team seized control of the game on the next play. The Black team fumbled on first down and Brent Calloway recovered the ball and returned it 27 yards for another touchdown for the White team. Brown added another extra point to extend the lead to 14-0.

The Black team got on the board two plays later when Grant Hagedorn hit Tyler Boyd for a 68-yard touchdown pass. Jose Betancourt missed the extra point.

Calloway scored on a 2-yard run with 2:41 remaining in the first quarter and Brown added another extra point.

The White team finished its scoring with less than a minute to go in the first half when Parker found Logan Ezzell in the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown pass. Brown added another extra point to extend the lead to 28-6 at halftime.

Boyd added a touchdown for the Black team with a 14-yard run with 8:06 remaining in the third quarter. Betancourt added the extra point.

Goodwin said he was impressed with several of the players including Hayden Crain, Parker, Boyd, Ezzell and Brown.

“We have to maintain the proper attitude and come to workouts and be committed to getting better over the summer,” Goodwin said. “Then we will get down to business in the fall.”
