Tigers top Sheffield

RED BAY — Red Bay’s defense turned back two fourth-quarter drives by Sheffield, kicking off the Tigers’ season with a 20-14 win over the Bulldogs.

This win marked coach Dale Jeffreys’ 100th win. He is in his 14th year as Red Bay’s coach.

The Tiger offense had 189 total yards in the first half on their way to a 20-point lead going into the final minutes of the second quarter.

Red Bay stalled the Bulldogs first attempt, forcing them to punt on fourth-and-8 from their 44-yard line.

The Tigers drove 62 yards on nine plays capped by a Joseph Reach touchdown with 5:44 remaining in the first quarter.

Red Bay came back minutes later, scoring from the 50-yard line on a run up the middle by Chase Lindsey.

The Tigers missed a 2-point conversion attempt for a 12-0 lead in the first quarter.

Red Bay (1-0, 0-0) came back and converted a Matt Senkbeil interception midway through the second quarter into their final score of the night.

Lindsey scored over the right side of the Bulldogs defensive line, and a 2-point conversion pass from Tiger quarterback Hunter Childers to Marco Bostick sealed Red Bay’s lead at 20-0.

That lead was cut when Sheffield added a touchdown with 1:43 remaining in the first half.

The Bulldogs (0-1, 0-0) scored again with only a few seconds remaining in the half after picking up a fumble by Red Bay.

An interception by Senkbeil late in the third cut short the Bulldogs’ drive that had reached Red Bay’s 18-yard line.

In the fourth quarter the Tiger defense, led by a sack by Matt Belue and a stop at the line by Ian Smith, again turned back Sheffield.

The Bulldogs’ final attempt that started at their own 33-yard line stalled at the Red Bay 23 when they failed to convert on fourth down.
