Flame rips Red Devils

VINA — Vina fell behind early and could not climb out of the hole as the Red Devils lost to Shoals Christian 48-8 in their Class 1A, Region 8 opener.

The Flame took a 10-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and extended it to 34-0 by halftime.

The Red Devils scored their only touchdown of the game with 5:21 to play in the fourth quarter when Nick Schmittou hit Adam Pharr with a 12-yard touchdown pass. The pair hooked up again for the 2-point conversion.

Ethan Hammock had 14 rushes for 80 yards to lead the Vina. Ethan Pharr added 57 yards on nine carries while Channing Haithcock had five carries for 28 yards.

Adam Pharr was the leading receiver with three catches for 63 yards. Clay Pierce also had three catches for 33 yards and Haithcock recorded three catches for 16 yards.

Red Devil coach James Pharr said he was proud of his team’s effort during the game and that they never gave up when the Flame were able to build a big lead.

Vina plays its first road game of the season next week when the Red Devils travel to Hackleburg.
