RFD program raises cancer awareness

During the month of October, firefighters with the RFD will be wearing and selling pink T-shirts to show their support for women battling cancer.
According to the RFD, the money from the T-shirt sales will be used locally to set up a fund at Russellville Hospital for people meeting certain criteria who do not have the money to pay for cancer-related medical expenses.
T-shirts can be purchased for $15 by calling 256-332-8761 or coming by the fire station. All sizes are available.
Also during the month of October, the RFD will be having a “Paint the County Pink” day on Monday, Oct. 25.
Franklin County residents are urged to wear pink that day to support women affected by breast cancer and other cancers.
To conclude the day, members of the Russellville Firefighters Association IAFF Local 4801 will host “Russellville Fire Working for a Cure” at the A. W. Todd Centre.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. and will include a freshly smoked pulled pork meal and musical entertainment by the Kerry Gilbert Band, Rewind, Brooklyn Hall, Blaze Bishop and Kody Madden.
Proceeds will benefit the cancer program at the hospital as well as the toy drive the department holds at Christmas time for needy children in the area.
Tickets to the event can be purchased at the fire station and are $15 for adults and $10 for children 10 and under.
