Though small in size, the town of Hodges is surrounded by natural resources and scenic views that provide an assortment of recreational and educational opportunities for the area.

Over the last five years, the town of Hodges has received grant funding from a variety of sources including Bear Creek Development Authority (BCDA), Alabama Department of Economic & Community Affairs (ADECA), Senator Roger Bedford and Rep. Johnny Mack Morrow to be used towards the creation of an extensive Equestrian/Multi Use Trail that will include camping and many other amenities.

In addition, Hodges was recently awarded an Alabama Resource Conservation & Development (RC&D) grant in the amount of $20,000 to be used for construction expenses and supplies for the trailhead.

This $20,000 grant was administered through the Northwest AL RC&D Council, which covers a five county area in Northwest Alabama.

“The trailhead, when completed, will consist of a campground host, 26 camp sites, a pavilion, bathrooms, an arena, barns to house the horses, and an entertainment/conference center,” said Hodges Mayor Ed Crouch.

Northwest AL RC&D Executive Board Chairman Roger Hayes said that these trails will bring important tourism dollars to not only Hodges but Franklin County as well and that equestrian trail riding is becoming more and more popular.

“During these tough economic times, this Equestrian/Multi Use Trail and campground will help draw people into the area that might not normally visit. Trail riders will travel long distances for a good trail so when visitors enjoy their stay here and appreciate the natural beauty that our area has to offer, they will want to come back and bring someone with them next time too. We, the Northwest AL RC&D Council, would like to commend Mayor Crouch and other community leaders for the outstanding vision they have shown throughout the course of this extensive project.”

Hayes also expressed his appreciation to Bedford, Morrow, Alabama RC&D, and other elected officials who represent Northwest Alabama and provide support for the Alabama RC&D program in the State Legislature.
