At press time on Tuesday, this is the updated list of people planning to run in the upcoming municipal elections to be held in Hodges, Phil Campbell, Red Bay, Russellville and Vina.
Potential candidates had until 5 p.m. yesterday when qualifying for municipal elections officially ended.
In the town of Hodges, current Mayor Ed Crouch has qualified; incumbent Samantha Gann qualified in Place 1; incumbent Melissa McHenry qualified in Place 2 along with newcomer Jeff Stidham; no one qualified for Place 3; and incumbent Jim Isom qualified in Place 4.
In Vina, current mayor D. W. Franklin and incumbent council members Mary Hammock in Place 1, Bill Moomaw in Place 2 and Robert Moomaw in Place 3 have qualified along with newcomer Denieta Cantrell, who qualified for Place 5. No one qualified for Place 4.
The citizens of Phil Campbell will have four newcomers to choose from in the mayor’s race – Steve Bell, Gary Reed, Jimmy Paul Rice and Greg Williams all qualified for the position. Also in Phil Campbell, incumbent Roy Nagle will be facing Dale Moody in Place 1; incumbent Danny Brown qualified for Place 2; current councilman Eddie Barton will be facing Melissa Mohr in Place 3; newcomers Kent Owen and Lynn Landers will face off in Place 4; and newcomer John White was the only one to qualify in Place 5.
Red Bay City Clerk Linda Holcomb said only incumbents have qualified for August’s city election, meaning Mayor Bobby Forsythe, Place 1 Councilman Mike Kennedy, Place 2 Councilman Mike Stockton, Place 3 Councilman David Tiffin, Place 1 Councilwoman Charlene Fancher and Place 1 Councilman Brad Bolton will be able to serve their city for another term.
In the county seat of Russellville, current mayor Troy Oliver will face current District 5 Councilman David Reed Grissom in the mayor’s race. In District 1, incumbent Jeff Masterson will face Terry Bolton and David Palmer; in District 2, incumbent William Nale will face Charles Patrick “Pat” Seal; in District 3, incumbent Gary Cummings will face Roy Cornelison and Burns “Buckshot” Saint; current councilman Lanny Hubbard qualified in District 4 and will face Otis “Geno” Garner and Tommy Hamilton; and in District 5, James “Jamie” Harris, Susie Malone and James Webb will face off to fill the vacancy left by David Grissom.
The municipal elections will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 28 and any run-offs will be held on Oct. 9.
