Grand jury indicts woman in infant’s death
A Franklin County woman who was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol when she was involved in a wreck that killed a 15-month-old child has been indicted for manslaughter, Franklin County District Attorney Joey Rushing said.
According to Rushing, Donna Huckaba, 42, of Phil Campbell, was indicted for manslaughter and driving under the influence by the November grand jury.
Rushing said the indictments stem from a wreck that occurred on July 16, 2011, about 10:45 p.m. on Franklin 34.
According to reports, Huckaba was driving a 2004 Ford-model vehicle when it collided with a 2007 Ford-model vehicle driven by 36-year-old Norma Torres, of Phil Campbell.
Fifteen-month-old Angela Mejias died as a result of injuries she sustained during the crash.
Investigators said the child was in a car safety seat in the backseat of the vehicle driven by Torres when the wreck occurred.
A 14 year-old passenger in that same vehicle was also injured in the crash. Jennifer Carreto, of Russellville, was injured in the wreck and was treated at an area hospital.
Neither Torres nor Huckaba were injured.
Rushing said Huckaba will be set for arraignment on Jan. 4 and her case will be placed on the criminal trial docket the week of Feb. 4.
