Beulah Hester, 101, Birmingham, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012.

She was born Sept. 5, 1911, in Franklin County.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John C. and Annie Wood Hester; two brothers, Wade and Austin Hester and a sister, Mattie Hester.

She is survived by a niece, Frieda Hester Sharp, of Birmingham, a nephew, John Finch Hester, of Gulfport, Miss.; grandnieces, Laura Sharp Silva, of Hallandale, Fla., and Anne Sharp Ehrlich and husband, Kenneth, of Rockport, Mass.; her grandnieces’ children, an extended family of cousins and many friends.

Ms. Hester graduated from Auburn University and received a Masters’ degree from Peabody College. Throughout her active years, Ms. Hester was dedicated to her career and church. She was a beloved teacher and later a counselor in the school systems of Franklin, Lawrence and Morgan counties for more than 40 years.

A lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, Ms. Hester served in almost every lay leadership capacity in her church including Sunday School teacher, Pastoral Relations Committee and the Administrative Council. She was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Eleanor Grant and Leah Sager, attentive, kind caregivers, as well as the staff members of Reed Cottage at St. Martians in the Pines.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at First United Methodist Church, Russellville, at 10 a.m.; before the service the family will receive visitors in the church from 9-10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, 311 Jackson Ave., Russellville, AL 35653, Vestavia Hill United Methodist Church, 2061 Kentucky Ave., Birmingham, AL 35216, or a charity of choice.
