Two local teens honored by DAR for work on essays

Two local teens were recently honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) for essays they submitted for the DAR Good Citizenship Award scholarship contest.

Katelynn Gordon, a senior at Russellville High School, won first place in the contest for the Northwest Alabama district for her essay on the ever-changing responsibilities of a good citizen and was awarded a $100 scholarship at a luncheon last week.

Karlie Oliver, a senior at Belgreen High School, placed third in the contest.

Only one student from each school in the Northwest Alabama district was nominated to enter the contest.

Students had to be nominated by their school’s faculty and then had to secure two recommendation letters from a teacher and a member of the community, submit a resume, and write a timed essay on a given topic without the aid of any other resources.

Gordon’s essay went on to win second place in the Northern Alabama district, which includes all areas north of Birmingham, and she will attend a DAR banquet in May for all participants.
