9-year-old killed in car wreck

A two-vehicle crash on Alabama 24 in Franklin County claimed the life of a child on Sunday afternoon, officials said.

Authorities said Abigail N. Williams, 9, of Hamilton, was killed when the 1999 Chevrolet S-10 she was a passenger in collided with another vehicle.

The crash occurred seven miles east of Russellville on Alabama 24 at approximately 1:35 p.m. Sunday.

Troopers said the child was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the truck.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said Dylan Lucas, 16, of Russellville, was the driver of the Chevy truck and was attempting to cross Alabama 24 when he pulled into oncoming traffic.

Denise Nelson, 50, of Brownsboro, was the driver of the other vehicle. Troopers said Nelson’s vehicle was burned beyond recognition and could not be readily identified.

Lucas and one other passenger from the Chevy truck were transported to Russellville Hospital.

Nelson and three other passengers from her vehicle were also transported to Russellville Hospital.

Authorities said all passengers transported for injuries were treated and released the same day.

The crash is still under investigation by the Alabama State Troopers.
