Editor’s Note: Franklin’s Future is a regular feature spotlighitng a high school senior in Franklin County and what they have planned for life after graduation.

Russellville High School senior Micah Fleming said he has enjoyed being part of the Russellville City School System and the many activities offered at RHS.

Fleming, 17, has been actively involved since starting high school, which is something he hopes he will help him in the future.

“Being part of different clubs and activities is something that looks good on your resume,” Fleming said.

“Grades are important and it’s always good to pay attention in class because the better grades you get the better off you’ll be, but I want to do all I can to try to get a good scholarship to college, and being involved and active can help you in that area by giving you leadership skills.”

While at RHS, Fleming has been involved in the National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Mu Alpha Theta, Future Farmers of America, Student Booster Club and the Student Council.

He was also a member of the Golden Tiger football team for two years and the baseball team for four years where he currently serves as the pitcher.

“Baseball is something I fell in love with at a young age and I have just enjoyed it ever since,” he said.

“I like being able to hang out with my friends and do something I enjoy at the same time.

“Being the pitcher can sometimes be stressful, but if there is a bad play or a bad pitch, I just try to keep a positive mindset and go on to the next play. I have to remind myself that if God is helping me, then I can be successful. Any success I’ve had comes from Him.”

Fleming said some of his best memories from high school have been related to sports.

“I played football in the ninth and tenth grades and I just remember all the good senior players we had and how they were good leaders,” he said. “He made it to the playoffs in ninth grade and that was a great memory.”

But Fleming said he knew he would make more memories this year as well.

“I’m looking forward to baseball starting in January and just working this semester getting ready for the season,” he said.

“I’m also looking forward to graduation.”

After he graduates, Fleming said he knew there would be things he would miss about high school, like the teachers and his classmates.

“I’ve heard people who go to other schools complain about the teachers they have, but Russellville has really nice teachers and that’s something I’ve enjoyed about RHS,” he said.

“I’m also going to really miss seeing everybody every day because I know there are some people I won’t see as much after graduation and some I probably won’t ever see again, but I hope I can stay in touch.”

Once he graduates in May, Fleming said he plans to go to Northwest-Shoals Community College for the first two years.

“I think that will be the best place for me to get my basics before I transfer to a four-year college,” he said.

Fleming said he was considering attending the University of Alabama in Huntsville to study engineering or the University of Alabama in Birmingham to pursue a career in physical therapy.

“Both careers would be a good fit for me and they would both be things were I could make a good living, which is important to me if I have a family one day so that I can provide for them,” he said.

“I’ve also been around physical therapy having sports injuries and I know how excited I would get when I was fully recovered, so it would be great to help other people get to that same point in their recovery.”

On down the road when he has his degree and his career path settled, Fleming said he could see himself returning to the area to settle down.

“Franklin County is just home to me,” he said. “I feel comfortable here and all my family lives here, so this is just where I see myself living.”

Fleming is the son of Jeff and Talitha Fleming. He has an older brother, Isaac, and a younger brother, Jacob.
