Man accused of attacking deputies with burning piece of wood

After a Russellville woman was arrested on drug charges Sunday at a recreational spot on an area lake, deputies said the woman’s husband became irate and allegedly attacked the two deputies with a burning piece of wood.

Bryan Douglas James, 39, 100 Town and Country Trailer Park, Lot F-9, Russellville, was arrested for first-degree assault of a police officer, public intoxication, resisting arrests and disorderly conduct.

Jennie Leann James, 39, 1528 Country Road 49, Russellville, was arrested for second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver, the sheriff’s office received a call Sunday evening that there was a male and a female at the public beach area on Cedar Lake who were allegedly smoking marijuana in the presence of children.

Oliver said two deputies were dispatched to the scene and when they arrived, the odor of marijuana was strong in the area.

“There was a male and a female in the area where the odor of marijuana was detected and there were children present,” Oliver said.

“The deputies discovered the female to be in possession of marijuana and they took her into custody.”

Oliver said after they had placed the female in the patrol car, the deputies went back to talk to the man.

“When they came back to the camp site, the man apparently became very angry and irate,” Oliver said.

“He actually took a burning stick out of the camp fire and started trying to hit one of the deputies with the stick while it was still on fire.”

Oliver said the deputies were able to get the man under control and took him into custody without anyone being injured.

At press time, Jennie James had bonded out of custody but Bryan James remained in custody at the Franklin County Jail.
